About The Manual

The fourth edition of the Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Manual (ASTM) represents four years of collaborative work between five medical microbiologists and two microbiology technologists. In addition to a thorough review of the literature, both clinical and laboratory, we have sought the advice of multiple experts, and have critically analyzed the susceptibility testing recommendations of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) and the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC). Where we have deviated from the established North American CLSI guidelines, we have provided an explanation and suggested breakpoints based either on EUCAST and/or BSAC recommendations.

This guide to susceptibility testing highlights the clinical importance of each organism, recommends specific testing methods and a reporting structure based on site of infection and rational antibiotic use.

Changes from the previous edition include comprehensive algorithms for the detection of beta-lactamases in Enterobacteriaceae, recommendations for the detection of vancomycin heteroresistance in Staphylococcus spp. as well as recommendations for Infection Control notification.

For the first time this manual will be available in an electronic version, making it possible to provide regular and timely updates.
